​Winston-Salem’s Art Crush on Friday night offers a perfect excuse for a winter stroll through the downtown arts district. Local artists will dazzle you with creative works that make great gifts—or simply inspire your own holiday creativity.

On Saturday, don’t miss the Cobblestone Farmers Market, where you can sip local coffee, shop fresh produce, and enjoy the cozy market vibes. Families will love Christmas for the City at the Benton Convention Center, where festive cheer is guaranteed.

Meanwhile, Kernersville hosts the annual Arts & Crafts Guild Christmas Store through Monday, giving you plenty of time to find unique, handcrafted treasures. And on Tuesday, Moms’ Morning Meetup at Kyles Coffee offers a warm, social space for parents to connect before the holiday rush.

Guilford County: Greensboro, High Point, Jamestown & Gibsonville

Greensboro is alive with holiday spirit. Saturday’s Farmers Curb Market is the ideal morning outing for fresh finds, while Grinchmas Wonderland on Sunday is a must for kids and kids-at-heart. And Winter Fest on Tuesday at Lindley Recreation Center brings the community together with fun, games, and festive cheer.

In Jamestown, families can snuggle up for a classic holiday favorite, The Polar Express, on Saturday morning. Over in Gibsonville, kids can bake, craft, and create with Cookies and Crafts with Santa.  ​

The second week of December is one of the most magical stretches of the season—lights everywhere, small-town parades rolling down Main Streets, and local markets in full holiday mode. Whether you’re planning a family outing, looking for something festive between classes or shifts, or just want to ease into the season without spending a dollar, this week has something for everyone.

And if your plans take you to Downtown Winston-Salem, there’s a little extra gift: on-street parking is free for the entire holiday season—now through January 2, 2026. 🚗✨

City-owned decks and lots still charge $1/hr, but street parking makes it especially easy to support local shops, grab a coffee, and enjoy the holiday atmosphere without worrying about the meter.

]]><![CDATA[A Noteworthy Crime: My Night at The Dinner Detective in Greensboro]]>Tue, 25 Nov 2025 19:28:10 GMThttps://www.piedmonttriadliving.com/blog/a-noteworthy-crime-my-night-at-the-dinner-detective-in-greensboroLast Saturday, I had the chance to spend an evening at The Dinner Detective in Greensboro, thanks to complimentary press passes, and I brought my friend Stacie as my guest. She threw a “murder mystery pool party” for her birthday last summer, so I knew she’d appreciate the adventure. The theme for the evening was “A Noteworthy Crime,” and from the moment we walked in, it promised to be a night full of laughter, surprises, and a few good guesses… or in my case, wrong guesses.

Before the event, we received a mysterious “clue” — a link to a music video. I’m still not sure what it meant, and honestly, that just added to the charm of the night.

​🕵️‍♀️ Code Names, First Impressions & Table Mates

Upon arrival at the Greensboro–High Point Marriott, the first order of business was choosing our code names. Stacie took charge, going with a 90s-country twist from our pre-show clue. She became Faith Kill, and I was christened Martina McDied. It felt like the perfect introduction to the playful tone of the evening.

Name tags in place, we found our assigned seats — right beside a crime-scene tape outline already marked on the floor. It was the only thing in the room that felt “off,” and it set the mood immediately. (I also happened to sit directly beside it, which made for a fun photo.)

The personalities at our table added so much to the experience.
We shared the evening with:
  • Thelma & Louise, who fully committed to their names,
  • Alexander Hamilton, a 20-something female who turned out to be loud, expressive, and hilarious,
  • Super Nana, who proudly shared that "Alexander" did drama in school — and trust me, you could tell,
  • And George, who said people tell him he’s curious.
  • The Listener, a woman 77 years young,
  • And The Listeners daughter, who was dubbed an FBI agent in the case.

The table conversation alone could’ve been its own show.

​🔎 How the Mystery Unfolded

The Dinner Detective sets itself apart with one key detail:
The performers blend in with the crowd. No cheesy costumes, no scripted feel, and no obvious “actors.” (Well, there was one guy over-the-top, but we had no clue the others were involved - even the "killer"!)

Throughout the night, detectives popped in and out, interrogating guests, presenting clues, and improvising their way through unexpected turns. That improv was honestly one of my favorite parts — they handled sidetracked lines and unexpected audience comments like pros.

And while there were no cast members seated at our table, that didn’t stop me from making my own confident accusation. I zeroed in on Louise, absolutely sure I was onto something. Spoiler: I was absolutely wrong… but I really thought I had it!

Clues were found throughout the room and also delivered directly to our phones through a QR code at our table, which kept everyone engaged and on track. It was a clever touch and kept the energy up.

The show moved quickly — in a good way. Slower pacing would’ve made it harder to stay focused, but this format kept the room buzzing.

​🍽️ Dinner, Dessert & Atmosphere

Dinner was pre-selected during ticket purchase, and the salads were already waiting for us when we sat down. The room itself was lively and full, with people of all ages and backgrounds. Seating was a little tight (10 to a table), but it also added to that warm, everyone-in-on-the-fun feeling.

Dessert deserves its own moment: a glittery, magical slice of cheesecake that caught the light just right and made everyone at the table pull out their phones. It was the prettiest dessert I’ve seen at an event in a while.

​🧩 Did I Solve It?

Not even close.

Even after the final explanation, I still don’t quite know how the detectives pieced everything together. And that’s okay — solving the crime wasn’t the point of the night for me. It was about enjoying the experience, the laughter, and the shared mystery with a room full of strangers.

​⭐ Final Thoughts

The Dinner Detective is something different — playful, interactive, and easy to enjoy whether you’re a true-crime fan, a puzzle-solver, or just looking for a memorable night out.

While this isn’t one of the free events we feature on the Piedmont Triad Living calendar, the value is clear: you’re getting dinner, dessert, entertainment, and a full evening’s experience all in one. It makes a great date night, girls’ night, or celebration.

​📝 Tips If You Go

A few things I learned that may help you plan your own visit:
  • Arrive on time. The action begins right away.
  • Pick a fun code name. It adds to the experience and breaks the ice.
  • Keep your phone close. That’s where the clues arrive.
  • Be ready to interact. Even if you’re not outgoing, participating makes it more fun.
  • Go in with a sense of humor. The show is intentionally silly, light, and fun.
  • Expect a mixed crowd. It’s an experience for all ages and backgrounds.

This year marked not only two decades of collective giving but also a renewed commitment to shaping a more equitable future for women and girls in Forsyth County. Piedmont Triad Living founder Jessica Sapp attended the luncheon, taking in a powerful afternoon of storytelling, celebration, and community impact.

​A Community Built on Collective Power

Since its founding in 2005 as an initiative of The Winston-Salem Foundation, the Women’s Fund has remained rooted in a simple idea: that when women pool their resources, their voices, and their choices, lasting change follows.

The Fund’s mission is clear and deeply felt:

Build economic security for women and girls in Forsyth County—together.
Over twenty years, that mission has translated into:
  • $2.4 million in grant support
  • Hundreds of programs uplifting women and girls
  • Data-driven advocacy shaping local policy
  • A democratic grantmaking model where every member has a vote

It’s a model of philanthropy that feels personal, intentional, and deeply local—very much in step with the heart of the Piedmont Triad.

​Celebrating the 2025 Grant Recipients

One of the most anticipated moments of the luncheon each year is the announcement of the grant recipients—organizations working directly with women and girls on economic security, advocacy, healing, and opportunity.

This year’s recipients reflect a wide range of services, from grief support to aviation education to culturally centered community work. Each one offers a needed path forward for women and girls across Forsyth County.

Bee Geek Inc.
Workshops, internships, and leadership programs connecting students with technology and communication skills.

B.O.N.D. Cares Inc.
A youth sports enrichment program building leadership and character through athletic engagement.

Into the Wild
Outdoor and leadership programming

Jim Shaw Ace Academy
Opening doors to aviation and aerospace careers for middle and high school students.

LetsNspire, Inc.
Empowering teen mothers through mentorship, education, and support.

Mi Casa
Meeting the needs of the Spanish-speaking community through advocacy, education, and outreach.

Mothers of Angels
A grief support network guiding bereaved mothers through healing.

Shalom Project
Programs aimed at breaking cycles of poverty through compassion, justice, and community care.

Sunnyside Ministry
Providing hope and resources through service, education, and empowerment.

The Well Center Inc. for Women in Transition
A bridge of support for women reentering the community after incarceration.

Triad Cultural Arts
Preserving and sharing the heritage of Black Americans through programs accessible to all.

Each of these organizations received a $15,000 grant, advancing the Fund’s mission to support those who are actively building economic security for women and girls.

​Why This Work Matters

Even today, less than 7% of all philanthropic dollars in the U.S. go to programs directly supporting women and girls. The Women’s Fund is working to change that—locally and intentionally.

Their grantmaking prioritizes:
  • Women-of-color-led organizations
  • Smaller nonprofits (under $250k annual revenue)
  • Programs where women and girls help shape the work

This focus fills gaps in traditional funding and amplifies voices that are too often overlooked.

​A Keynote That Moved the Room

This year’s keynote speaker, Chevara Orrin, brought the room to a thoughtful hush. A diversity strategist, filmmaker, author, and lifelong activist, her story is one of resilience and radical hope.

Chevara shared her lived experiences—surviving childhood poverty, violence, and systemic barriers—and how those early hardships fueled her life of advocacy.

Her parents’ legacies also anchor her work:
  • Her mother, a Jewish activist, served as lead coordinator for the 1967 March on the Pentagon.
  • Her father was a top lieutenant to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., active in key civil rights campaigns including the Birmingham Children’s Crusade and Selma marches. (He is portrayed in the film SELMA by artist Common.)

​A Milestone Year for a Community-Focused Movement

Twenty years in, The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem continues to demonstrate just how powerful local, collective giving can be. Their democratic process, data-guided advocacy, and focus on organizations rooted in community all contribute to long-term, measurable change.​

And like many of the local stories we share at Piedmont Triad Living, this one reminds us that community impact doesn’t always come from big moments—it comes from people showing up, contributing what they can, and believing in the potential of their neighbors.

Wicked Movie Night takes over the ballpark from 6-9pm in Winston-Salem, and it's the perfect way to start your weekend.
