Fall is officially here, and the Piedmont Triad is giving us plenty of free reasons to get out of the house.

This week brings fall festivals, live music, family activities, outdoor fun, art, community events, car shows, movies and more — and we've rounded up the free ones so you don't have to search all over the internet.

A few highlights this week:
  • 🎃 Fall festivals and seasonal events are everywhere on Saturday, including Pumpkin Festival in Lexington, AutumnFest in Mebane, Harvest Festival in Pfafftown and Foothills Farm Festival in Danbury.
  • 🎶 Free live music ranges from Motown in Walnut Cove to Latin Fest at Bailey Park and concerts in parks throughout the Piedmont Triad.
  • 🚗 Car lovers have a particularly good weekend, with Cars & Coffee, JeepFest, cruise-ins and several car shows.

]]><![CDATA[Your Fall Lawn Guide: What Piedmont Triad Homeowners Should Do Now]]>Fri, 25 Sep 2026 16:32:28 GMThttps://www.piedmonttriadliving.com/blog/your-fall-lawn-guide-what-piedmont-triad-homeowners-should-do-nowFall has arrived in the Piedmont Triad — and if you’re looking at your lawn this weekend wondering what you should be doing, The Yard Boss has some advice.

After a couple of gray, rainy days, the forecast is looking beautiful for the first weekend of fall. For a lot of homeowners, that means it’s a perfect time to get outside and tackle some yard work.

But what actually needs to be done right now?

We asked Rob, owner of The Yard Boss, to give Piedmont Triad homeowners some practical fall lawn-care advice — including what you can do yourself, what you should watch for, and when it’s time to call in a professional.

First: Know What Kind of Grass You Have

According to Rob, fescue is the most common lawn grass in our area, although hybrid Bermuda is becoming more common in newer planned communities. You’ll also find other warm-season grasses such as zoysia.

And that matters because fall lawn care isn't one-size-fits-all.

If you have fescue, fall is your big season for lawn preparation. Fescue is a cool-season grass that tends to struggle through our hot Piedmont summers, so fall is the time to help it recover and build strong growth heading into spring. NC State Extension also identifies early fall as the ideal seeding period for tall fescue in the Piedmont.

Warm-season grasses such as Bermuda and zoysia have a different schedule. As temperatures and soil temperatures drop, they'll begin preparing for dormancy and eventually turn brown. That doesn't necessarily mean they're dead.

Rob's personal favorite? Zoysia.

If You Have Fescue, Think Seed + Aerate

For a fescue lawn, Rob's biggest recommendation is simple:

Seed and aerate.

The timing is now. Rob recommends late September into early October for fescue, which lines up with the fall planting window for the Piedmont.

Aeration is particularly important because your lawn spends the year dealing with foot traffic, mowing and other sources of soil compaction.

When you core aerate, you pull plugs of soil from the lawn. That creates pathways for oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the root zone while helping loosen compacted soil. The result is room for roots to grow deeper and develop stronger turf.

Then comes the seed.

And don't forget the watering.

Once you've seeded, Rob says you'll need to keep the soil consistently moist — watering every day for at least two weeks. The goal is moist soil, not a muddy lawn. As the seed germinates and the new grass begins growing, you can gradually back off on the watering.

You'll also want to give that new grass a chance to establish.

Keep foot traffic and leaves off the newly seeded areas as much as possible.

Can You Do It Yourself?

Absolutely.

Rob says homeowners can tackle fall lawn care themselves, but two things are especially important: buying the correct seed and knowing how to properly core aerate.

And this is one area where doing a little homework before you start can save you some frustration later.

Not all grass seed is created equal. Rob specifically warns homeowners about using poor-quality seed because unwanted grass species can be introduced into your lawn along with it.

One example is Poa annua, or annual bluegrass, which can become a recurring winter weed problem. Rob says getting it under control can take multiple years, depending on how much is present. NC State also identifies annual bluegrass as a common winter annual in North Carolina lawns.

So before grabbing the cheapest bag of seed you can find, know what you're buying and what you're putting into your lawn.

What About Fertilizer and Lime?

If you're seeding, Rob recommends using a starter fertilizer rather than simply grabbing any fertilizer off the shelf.

He compares starter fertilizer to a “steroid shot” for developing grass — something designed to give new growth the nutrients it needs to get established.

Lime is different. Its job is to help maintain the soil's pH, and Rob says the timing of lime application isn't particularly important.

But there's a bigger point here:

Don't think of fertilizer as something you use once when you seed and then forget about.

Your lawn needs nutrients throughout the year. If you're only fertilizing when you put down seed, Rob says you're setting yourself up for problems going into spring and summer.

And if you're not sure what your lawn needs, that's a good time to get some professional advice rather than guessing.

What About Weeds?

This is where fall lawn care can get a little tricky.

Rob says many of the weeds you'll see this time of year are seasonal. Some of the common ones include:
  • Henbit
  • Chickweed
  • Bittercress
  • Poa annua (annual bluegrass)

These winter annual weeds are common in North Carolina lawns, particularly where turf is thin or soil stays moist.

But don't immediately reach for the weed killer, especially if you've just seeded.
Newly germinated grass can be sensitive to herbicides, and the product, timing and grass type all matter. NC State specifically cautions that some herbicides can affect newly seeded turf and recommends following the product label.

Rob's advice is to let the new turf get established before treating weeds, and to make sure any products you're using are appropriate for your particular grass.

And Then There Are the Leaves

It's fall in North Carolina. The leaves are coming.

Rob's advice?

Don't let them sit there.

Leaves left on the lawn can block light and air from reaching the grass. If they stay long enough, they can essentially smother the turf and leave you with dead or thin patches.

So you don't necessarily have to spend every beautiful fall day chasing individual leaves around the yard — but you do want to keep leaves and other debris from accumulating and sitting on the grass for extended periods.

The more frequently you can remove them, the better.

What Should You NOT Do?

Rob's biggest warning isn't about something you should add to your lawn.

It's about what you put on it.

If you're following a lawn-care plan you found online, make sure the products you're using are actually appropriate for your particular type of turf — and that they're permitted for use in North Carolina.

Pay attention to:
  • The type of grass you're treating
  • The timing of the application
  • The mixing rate
  • The application rate
  • The product label

More is not better.

Rob points out that over-application can damage or kill your lawn — and can be illegal. Under-application, meanwhile, may simply waste your time and money.

In other words: Don't assume that because a product worked for someone's lawn online, it's automatically right for yours.

When Should You Call a Professional?

This may be the hardest part for a DIY homeowner to hear.

Sometimes the best lawn-care decision is admitting you don't know what's wrong.

If your lawn is struggling, you have persistent weeds, you're not sure what type of grass you have, or you're confused about what products to use and when to use them, Rob recommends having a professional take a look.

And honestly? That's part of the reason we wanted to ask him these questions in the first place.

Lawn care isn't just about buying a bag of fertilizer and putting it down. The grass, soil, weather, timing and environmental conditions are all constantly changing.

As Rob put it, “Mother Nature does play by a script” — and that script changes.​

Rob's Simple Fall Lawn Checklist

If you don't want to remember everything you just read, here's the short version.

If you have fescue:

✓ Seed
✓ Core aerate
✓ Keep the soil consistently moist while seed is establishing
✓ Keep foot traffic to a minimum
✓ Keep leaves and debris off the new grass
✓ Use an appropriate starter fertilizer when seeding
✓ Follow a fertilizer plan throughout the year

If you have warm-season grass such as Bermuda or zoysia:

✓ Keep leaves and debris off the lawn
✓ Keep foot traffic reasonable as the grass heads toward dormancy
✓ Don't seed just because it's fall — warm-season grasses have a different schedule
✓ Be aware of winter weeds such as Poa annua

And if you're not sure what your lawn needs?

This piece was written by Quamekia “Que” Shavers and reflects her personal views on Winston-Salem’s Youth Protection Ordinance and the upcoming discussion about whether it should continue.

   Winston-Salem is at a critical crossroads regarding how it treats its younger generation. The city's Public Safety Committee recently cast a split 2-2 vote on a key proposal, successfully securing enough votes to advance the issue to the full Winston-Salem City Council for a final decision. Committee Chair Antoinette Scippio and Vice Chair Regina Ford Hall voted in favor of moving the proposal forward to extend the temporary Youth Protection Ordinance for a full year, while Council Members Scott Andree-Bowen and Vivian V. Joiner voted no. This legislative push comes with intense urgency, as the city's current juvenile curfew is officially set to expire on October 12. The stage is now set for the full council’s upcoming meeting, which will feature a designated public hearing separate from the traditional public comment period to address the extension before it lapses.

   When the full council convenes, they must look past superficial rhetoric and demand real substance. During the committee sessions, Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn Jr. failed to present a definitive, data-backed argument establishing exactly why a restrictive citywide curfew needs to remain on the books. The data presented was thin, lacking the robust empirical proof required to justify stripping an entire demographic of their basic freedom of movement. Furthermore, the critical differences between the structured school year and the unstructured summer season were entirely overlooked in the assessment.

   Worse still are the supposed safety nets offered as community solutions. The alternative engagement opportunities highlighted by the police department rely entirely on local community organizations and non-profits, rather than robust city infrastructure. These programs have been a total flop for this crisis. They completely miss the mark, failing to target the specific teenage age bracket covered by the ordinance. Even if a teenager wanted to participate, they couldn’t; these organizations do not operate during the late-night curfew hours, with most closing their doors by 5:00 PM or 7:30 PM. To offer daytime programming as a viable defense for a night-time curfew is a fundamental logical disconnect.

   Perhaps the most glaring failure of this process is that throughout all the debates, data collection, and committee votes, no one has actually asked the children for their perspective. By pushing this year-long extension forward, the city sends a damaging message to our youth: we are punishing the masses for the behavior of a small group. There are bad actors in every single sector of life, yet we do not apply collective punishment to adults. For instance, when there are bad police officers, you do not shut down the entire police department—you address the specific officers who are the bad actors. Yet, when it comes to our teenagers, the city chooses to penalize every young person rather than addressing the root causes of the individuals causing trouble. This approach exposes a systemic flaw in how our city leadership operates: Winston-Salem is leaning entirely on the "stick" while completely forgetting the "carrot." There is truly nothing left in this city designed to support, engage, and uplift our youth. We have criminalized their presence rather than investing in their future. When young people take it upon themselves to build community, gather organically, and carve out their own hangout opportunities, they are met with systemic hostility and constantly pushed out. A healthy city provides safe, dedicated, and accessible late-night spaces for teenagers to grow. Winston-Salem, however, chooses to clear the streets and issue citations.

   As the full council prepares for the final vote, city leaders must face the public and answer for this lopsided strategy. Punishing youth for having nowhere to go—while simultaneously refusing to fund the places they actually need—is not public safety. It is a failure of community imagination.

   As leaders of Winston-Salem, the city should want to support our youth. Leaders should want to invest in them. The city should not just be willing to enact an ordinance that will charge not only youth but also their parents; they should also be willing to give a real alternative.

   This is exactly why I will be standing in City Hall this upcoming Monday for the council meeting. The meeting will start promptly at 6:00 PM, but I will be arriving around 5:30 PM to sign in to speak, and I encourage everyone who cares about our community’s future to do the same. When I step up to the microphone, I will be advocating fiercely for both the carrot and the stick. If our leadership is so willing to provide complex mechanisms and rules to punish children who are bad actors, what are they prepared to build for the vast majority who are not? What do we actually have for them? Our community leadership must step up and show that they truly want to invest in the potential of our youth—not just control them.

Looking for free things to do in the Piedmont Triad this week? From Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point to Kernersville, Clemmons, Lexington, Elkin, Mount Airy, Asheboro and all the communities in between, there are dozens of free events happening September 11–17.

One of the things I love about living in the Piedmont Triad is how connected everything is. A free concert in one town, a farmers market in another, an outdoor movie a little farther down the road—it's all part of the same region, and sometimes the best plan is the one you didn't know was just a short drive away.

I've organized this week's events by county and city so you can easily see what's happening around the region and decide where the week takes you.

🎶 Friday Night Is Packed With Music

Friday is going to be a tough night for making decisions.

There's Downtown Jazz in Winston-Salem, Music at the Market in Dobson, iNCognNiTo Live at the Elkin Railyard, Friday Night Rock'n the Park in Asheboro, Concerts in the Park in Burlington and more.

You may need to pick your direction before you pick your concert. 😂

🐝 Honeybee Festival in Kernersville

I just added this one to the calendar, and it definitely deserves a spot on the list!

The Kernersville Honeybee Festival takes over Fourth of July Park on Saturday from 10am–5pm. The free festival features vendors, food trucks, live entertainment, kids' activities, honey and more.

🎒 Back-to-School Celebrations

Back-to-school season is here, but that doesn't mean summer fun has to stop.

Mebane has a Downtown at Dusk - Back to School Bash on Thursday, while High Point hosts a Back to School Bash on Saturday.

Saturday morning brings farmers markets all over the Triad, including Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Kernersville, Lexington, Thomasville, Clemmons, Summerfield and Elkin.
