A Noteworthy Crime: My Night at The Dinner Detective in Greensboro

Last Saturday, I had the chance to spend an evening at The Dinner Detective in Greensboro, thanks to complimentary press passes, and I brought my friend Stacie as my guest. She threw a “murder mystery pool party” for her birthday last summer, so I knew she’d appreciate the adventure. The theme for the evening was “A Noteworthy Crime,” and from the moment we walked in, it promised to be a night full of laughter, surprises, and a few good guesses… or in my case, wrong guesses.

Before the event, we received a mysterious “clue” — a link to a music video. I’m still not sure what it meant, and honestly, that just added to the charm of the night.

​🕵️‍♀️ Code Names, First Impressions & Table Mates

Upon arrival at the Greensboro–High Point Marriott, the first order of business was choosing our code names. Stacie took charge, going with a 90s-country twist from our pre-show clue. She became Faith Kill, and I was christened Martina McDied. It felt like the perfect introduction to the playful tone of the evening.

Name tags in place, we found our assigned seats — right beside a crime-scene tape outline already marked on the floor. It was the only thing in the room that felt “off,” and it set the mood immediately. (I also happened to sit directly beside it, which made for a fun photo.)

The personalities at our table added so much to the experience.
We shared the evening with:

• Thelma & Louise, who fully committed to their names,
• Alexander Hamilton, a 20-something female who turned out to be loud, expressive, and hilarious,
• Super Nana, who proudly shared that "Alexander" did drama in school — and trust me, you could tell,
• And George, who said people tell him he’s curious.
• The Listener, a woman 77 years young,
• And The Listeners daughter, who was dubbed an FBI agent in the case.

The table conversation alone could’ve been its own show.

​🔎 How the Mystery Unfolded

The Dinner Detective sets itself apart with one key detail:
The performers blend in with the crowd. No cheesy costumes, no scripted feel, and no obvious “actors.” (Well, there was one guy over-the-top, but we had no clue the others were involved - even the "killer"!)

Throughout the night, detectives popped in and out, interrogating guests, presenting clues, and improvising their way through unexpected turns. That improv was honestly one of my favorite parts — they handled sidetracked lines and unexpected audience comments like pros.

And while there were no cast members seated at our table, that didn’t stop me from making my own confident accusation. I zeroed in on Louise, absolutely sure I was onto something. Spoiler: I was absolutely wrong… but I really thought I had it!

Clues were found throughout the room and also delivered directly to our phones through a QR code at our table, which kept everyone engaged and on track. It was a clever touch and kept the energy up.

The show moved quickly — in a good way. Slower pacing would’ve made it harder to stay focused, but this format kept the room buzzing.

​🍽️ Dinner, Dessert & Atmosphere

Dinner was pre-selected during ticket purchase, and the salads were already waiting for us when we sat down. The room itself was lively and full, with people of all ages and backgrounds. Seating was a little tight (10 to a table), but it also added to that warm, everyone-in-on-the-fun feeling.

Dessert deserves its own moment: a glittery, magical slice of cheesecake that caught the light just right and made everyone at the table pull out their phones. It was the prettiest dessert I’ve seen at an event in a while.

​🧩 Did I Solve It?

Not even close.

Even after the final explanation, I still don’t quite know how the detectives pieced everything together. And that’s okay — solving the crime wasn’t the point of the night for me. It was about enjoying the experience, the laughter, and the shared mystery with a room full of strangers.

The Dinner Detective is something different — playful, interactive, and easy to enjoy whether you’re a true-crime fan, a puzzle-solver, or just looking for a memorable night out.

While this isn’t one of the free events we feature on the Piedmont Triad Living calendar, the value is clear: you’re getting dinner, dessert, entertainment, and a full evening’s experience all in one. It makes a great date night, girls’ night, or celebration.

A few things I learned that may help you plan your own visit:

• Arrive on time. The action begins right away.
• Pick a fun code name. It adds to the experience and breaks the ice.
• Keep your phone close. That’s where the clues arrive.
• Be ready to interact. Even if you’re not outgoing, participating makes it more fun.
• Go in with a sense of humor. The show is intentionally silly, light, and fun.
• Expect a mixed crowd. It’s an experience for all ages and backgrounds.
