 One of the best-kept secrets in the Piedmont Triad? The incredible, free performances hosted by our local colleges and universities—especially the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in Winston-Salem. Every spring, UNCSA students showcase their talent in recitals, film screenings, and concerts, offering the community a chance to experience world-class performances without the high-ticket prices. While these events may not be your typical “family-friendly” outings, they can be a fantastic experience for kids who love music, film, or storytelling—or for parents looking to introduce them to something new. When my girls were little, I brought them to performances like these, and they loved it. They sat still, soaked in the music, and learned how to appreciate live performances in a way that felt natural.
