Get ready for a burst of color and creativity in downtown Kernersville! The Kernersville Mural Festival, featuring Ladies Who Paint, is happening May 2-4, and it’s a can’t-miss event for art lovers and community supporters alike. This unique festival brings together local women artists who will transform the exteriors of buildings throughout downtown Kernersville, creating stunning large-scale murals for the public to enjoy. The best part? You can watch the creative process unfold live as these talented artists bring their visions to life over the course of the festival. Once the work is complete, the murals will remain as part of a vibrant public art walk that adds lasting beauty and character to the heart of Kernersville. Art with Purpose: Empowering Women and Inspiring CommunityThe Kernersville Mural Festival is the brainchild of local mural artist Christina Parrish, whose passion for public art has already left a mark on the Triad. Christina’s work can be seen in places like downtown Winston-Salem, where her impressive mural for the Linville Team brought new energy and color to the area. Her vision for this festival goes beyond creating beautiful art — it’s about empowering women artists, fostering community engagement, and turning Kernersville into a destination for art lovers and visitors. By supporting this event, sponsors will not only invest in public art but also contribute to community pride, tourism growth, and the promotion of women in the arts. Each mural will tell a story that reflects the spirit of Kernersville and serves as a symbol of creativity and inclusivity. Piedmont Triad Living is Proud to Be a Square Foot Sponsor! At Piedmont Triad Living, we love shining a spotlight on events that bring our community together, and we’re thrilled to support the Kernersville Mural Festival as a Square Foot Sponsor. Having admired Christina Parrish’s work in Winston-Salem, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to help bring this inspiring event to life. Want to get involved? You can make an impact too! Encourage your friends, family, and local businesses to become sponsors and play a role in leaving a bold, colorful mark on Kernersville. Sponsorship is a wonderful way to show support for local artists while investing in the vibrancy of the community. Mark Your Calendar!Whether you're an art enthusiast, a supporter of women artists, or just looking for a fun and meaningful way to spend a spring weekend, the Kernersville Mural Festival is the perfect event. Make plans to head downtown May 2-4 and witness creativity in action. This is the same weekend as Kernersville's annual Spring Folley, a large festival with vendors, food, entertainment, and rides! Spring Folley brings 30,000 people from near and far. Let’s come together to celebrate art, community, and the powerful impact of women who paint!

If you live in Winston-Salem, you’ve probably noticed piles of unwanted furniture, broken appliances, and other random items starting to line the curbs. That’s right--bulky item collection is in full swing! A few weeks before your neighborhood’s scheduled pick-up, the City of Winston-Salem sends out a handy postcard letting you know when it’s time to start clearing out the clutter. This year, our neighborhood’s turn was this week, and I was amazed at how smoothly everything went. We started dragging items to the curb on Friday, and by the time I carried out a broken appliance and came back out for my next load, a “scavenger” had already swooped in and taken it. I couldn’t believe how fast things disappeared! Honestly, by the time the city’s trucks rolled around on Monday morning, our pile was half gone. This year, the city was on it - our entire pile was gone before 9 a.m. on the first day of our scheduled week! ✅ Accepted Items for Bulky Pick-UpIf you’re ready to clear out your unwanted items, here’s a quick list of what the city will gladly haul away:
Pro Tip: If your items are still in decent condition, don’t be surprised if a savvy “scavenger” grabs them before the city does. It’s a great way for gently used items to get a second life! ❌ Items You Can’t Put Out for Bulky Pick-UpNow, before you haul everything out, it’s important to know that not everything can be collected. The following items are a no-go:
📺 Special Note on ElectronicsElectronics deserve their own category because they’re banned from landfills in North Carolina. That means you cannot throw out the following items:
If you need to get rid of any of these, you’ll need to take them to an electronics recycling center or a designated drop-off site. 🗓️ When and How to Put Out Your Bulky ItemsHere’s how to make sure your items get picked up without any hassle:
♻️ What If I Miss My Pick-Up?If you miss your neighborhood’s bulky pick-up (or have more items throughout the year), you can still dispose of these items at the Hanes Mill Road Landfill. Hours:
👉 Need a permit? Find landfill permit information here. 🔍 Find Your Pick-Up Date Online Not sure when your neighborhood’s turn is? You can quickly look up your collection date by entering your address here. It’s super easy to use! 📞 Got Questions? If you have any questions about bulky item collection, call 336-727-2638 or visit the city’s bulky items page for more information. Final Tip: Whether it’s time to clean out your garage, replace old furniture, or finally get rid of that broken appliance, bulky pick-up is a great opportunity to declutter—and maybe even let someone else breathe new life into your discarded items. Guess Where!I was going through my photo archives and came across this fun photo I took on March 15, 2019. Can you guess what or where this might be?
(scroll down if you want to know!) I took this photo from one of the upper floors at 500 W 5th in Downtown Winston-Salem (the former GMAC building). When Don Flow bought the building, the name was changed to 500 W 5th and the building signage went up in March 2019. |
