Discover Free Fun at Piedmont Triad Libraries: Your Community Hub for Learning and Connection4/23/2025 Looking for a budget-friendly way to spark curiosity, entertain the kids, or dive into something new? Your local libraries have you covered. From story times to tech workshops, these community gems offer a treasure trove of free events and resources. Growing up, my parents always said, “Readers are leaders,” and I’ve seen firsthand how libraries inspire that leadership through knowledge and connection. At Piedmont Triad Living, we’re all about uncovering free things to do, and libraries across Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties are perfect for families and lifelong learners. Let’s explore why libraries are your go-to for fun, learning, and community vibes. Scroll to the bottom for the full list of libraries in the Piedmont Triad, including address. Why Libraries Are a Family’s Best FriendLibraries aren’t just about books (though those are awesome too). They’re vibrant hubs where families can bond, kids can grow, and everyone can explore new interests without spending a dime. Most libraries in the Piedmont Triad host calendars packed with free events - think toddler story times, teen gaming nights, author talks, and even STEM workshops. Plus, they offer free Wi-Fi, computers, and access to e-books and streaming services like Libby or Hoopla. Whether you’re a parent juggling a tight budget or a retiree looking to learn a new skill, libraries deliver. When I was a kid, our school's 100-book reading program was the highlight of my schoolyear. I’d race to log my book, earn prizes, and the students that reached 100 had a pizza party. I was always one of the first to hit the magic number! That “readers are leaders” mantra stuck with me, and now I see the same magic happening for families across the Triad. Libraries level the playing field, giving everyone access to tools and opportunities to thrive. A Tour of Piedmont Triad Libraries and Their Free EventsThe Piedmont Triad is home to dozens of libraries, each with its own charm and a calendar bursting with free activities. Here’s a peek at what’s happening across the region, with links to event calendars so you can plan your visit. At Piedmont Triad Living, we're passionate about bringing you the very best in family-friendly fun across our region. If you're looking for a weekend adventure that’s all about local pride, fresh air, and unforgettable memories, you won’t want to miss the Davidson County Farm Tour 2025!
If you’re looking for a perfect spring outing that’s fun, educational, and easy on the wallet, the Davidson County Local Food Network's Farm Tour 2025 needs to be on your calendar! While the Farm Tour isn’t a free event, the $5-per-car admission is one of the best bargains you’ll find for a full day of family-friendly adventure. Pack the kids, bring your friends, and get ready to enjoy an up-close look at some of the beautiful farms that help feed our region. The tours are Saturday and Sunday, May 31-June 1, 2025 and you'll need to purchase your ticket ahead of time here. Why Visit Davidson County Farms?
Davidson County, nestled right here in the heart of the Piedmont, has a rich agricultural history — and it’s still going strong today. Home to over 1,000 farms covering more than 90,000 acres, this community produces everything from fresh vegetables and grains to cattle, poultry, and even greenhouse plants. Fun fact: 66% of the county’s agricultural sales come from livestock and poultry, making it one of the top players in North Carolina’s farming scene!
And while farming isn't without its challenges — like development pressures, aging farmers, and unpredictable weather — the spirit of Davidson County agriculture remains strong. Many farms here are small and family-owned, with generations working together to adapt, innovate, and keep the land thriving. What to Expect on the Farm Tour
The Farm Tour gives visitors a rare behind-the-scenes peek at local farms. You'll meet farmers, see animals, and learn how food gets from the farm to your table. Depending on which stops you choose, you might experience:
It’s not just fun — it’s a great way to support our hardworking local farmers, many of whom balance farming with full-time jobs, just to keep their family traditions alive. Plus, you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for the dedication it takes to raise crops and animals, especially in a world where farming faces more challenges than ever. Why Your $5 Matters
That small $5/car fee helps cover costs and supports the Davidson County Local Food Network’s mission to connect our community with local food producers. It also means you can enjoy multiple farms in one day without worrying about additional admission charges at each stop.
Think about it: for less than the price of a fancy coffee, your entire family can spend the day surrounded by wide-open fields, friendly farm animals, and real stories of resilience and tradition. Final Tips for a Great Day on the Farm
Whether you’ve lived in the Piedmont all your life or you're new to the area, the Davidson County Farm Tour 2025 is a heartwarming reminder of the deep roots and bright future of our local agriculture.

Hey Piedmont Triad mamas! If your family is anything like mine, you’ve probably got a soft spot for a good baseball game. For years, my crew and I have been piling into the car to cheer on the Winston-Salem Dash at Truist Stadium—and it’s a blast every single time. So when I heard the Dash are rolling out some major stadium upgrades for the 2025 season, I couldn’t wait to spill the details for all you fellow moms out there planning family fun. I’ll be tossing in some of my favorite Dash game pics from over the years too—because if there’s one thing we love, it’s making memories with our kiddos at the ballpark! This isn’t one of our usual freebie events here at Piedmont Triad Living (we know you love those!), but if you’ve got a little room in the budget, this is shaping up to be a home run for a family night out. The Dash have been our hometown heroes since they landed in Winston-Salem back in 2009—remember when we celebrated their 10th season? (Peep our throwback post here for a little trip down memory lane.) With new owners Diamond Baseball Holdings stepping up, they’re making Truist Stadium even better for 2025. Think of it as the perfect excuse to round up the fam and soak in some summer vibes. What’s New at Truist Stadium?Picture this: you’re at the ballpark, the sun’s setting, the kids are munching on snacks, and you’re actually relaxed because the experience feels fresh and fun. Here’s what the Dash are bringing to the table in 2025:
Promo Nights We Can’t Wait ForThe Dash always bring the fun with their theme nights, and 2025’s lineup is no exception. Here are a few I’m circling on my calendar (check the full scoop here):
Tickets: Worth the Splurge?Okay, let’s talk tickets. Unlike the free community events we usually spotlight, a night at Truist Stadium does come with a cost. Single-game tickets typically start around $10-$15 for general admission, with premium seats like the Lowes Foods Landing running a bit higher (think $20-$30 depending on the game and perks). Kids’ tickets are often discounted, and there are family packages if you’re bringing the whole crew. You can snag them online at milb.com/winston-salem once the season schedule drops. Is it free? Nope. But is it a blast for the family if you’ve got some wiggle room in the budget? Absolutely! Between the upgraded stadium vibes, tasty new eats, and those promo nights, it’s a chance to make a summer evening feel like a mini-vacation. Plus, with 66 home games from April to September, you’ve got plenty of chances to find a night that works for your busy mom schedule. Parking at Truist Stadium also costs, but you can find free parking downtown after 6pm and take the free shuttle from designated pick-up spots to the baseball field. This is a great way to avoid the stadium traffic and avoid parking fees. Here's more info about the Downtown Dash Shuttle. Why We’re Dash Superfans
Equally Fun and a Little Cheaper - the Carolina Disco Turkeys! Boogie games between innings at Carolina Disco Turkeys game, 2021. Photo: Piedmont Triad Living Oh, and speaking of baseball love, we can’t get enough of the Carolina Disco Turkeys! Alongside our Dash devotion, my family’s been grooving to the funky vibes of this summer league team for years. Playing at Wake Forest University’s Couch Ballpark, the Disco Turkeys bring a wild, colorful energy that’s impossible not to adore—think outrageous uniforms, a mascot named Boogie, and a whole lot of heart. Tickets are just $10 each (kids in youth baseball or softball jerseys even get in free!), and parking’s on the house, making it a wallet-friendly alternative for a night of family fun. They’ve just announced all their 2025 home games will be at Couch Ballpark (check it out here), and we’re already counting down to catch them strut their stuff again! Grab your sunscreen, rally the fam, and let’s root, root, root for the home team. Who’s in for a Dash or Carolina Discos night this summer? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your game-day plans! If you’re tired of scrolling Google Maps for a decent meal only to end up with something “meh,” you’re not alone. A recent Reddit thread on r/winstonsalem caught my eye, where a road-weary traveler often coming through W-S for work, begged the local community for help: “Favorite hole-in-the-wall, locally owned Winston-Salem restaurants?” They were done with mediocre chain spots and craving the real deal—those unassuming, off-the-radar joints that locals rave about. After sifting through dozens of passionate responses, I’ve compiled the ultimate guide for Piedmont Triad Living readers. Whether you’re a visitor passing through or a local looking to shake up your routine, these spots promise food worth talking about. Let’s dig into Winston-Salem’s hidden culinary treasures! Scroll to the bottom to see all of the restaurants listed alphabetically! Why Hole-in-the-Wall Spots MatterThere’s something magical about a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Maybe it’s the no-frills vibe, the family-run charm, or the fact that the food feels like a secret only you and a handful of others know about. In Winston-Salem, these locally owned gems are the heartbeat of the food scene—offering everything from sloppy takeout to solo three-course dinners at the bar. The Redditor nailed it: they wanted flavor, authenticity, and a chance to support the community. Lucky for them (and you), Winston’s got plenty of that. Mexican Magic: Tacos, Birria, and MoreMexican cuisine dominated the thread, and it’s no surprise—Winston-Salem’s got a knack for delivering south-of-the-border flavors that hit all the right spots. Los Juanes* on Jonestown Road topped the list with multiple shoutouts for their quesabirrias—think cheesy, beefy goodness that’s “fantastic” according to fans. Pair that with Los Dos Carnales*, where the sopes are “the best ever” and portions leave you full and happy. For a food truck fix, head to the green truck outside Compare Foods on Silas Creek—locals swear by its birria and tamales sold straight from someone’s trunk. Other standouts include La Perlita, Antojitos Las Delicias, and Don Taquila for carnitas that’ll make you forget every other version you’ve tried. Pro Tip: Craving variety? Que Viva blends Colombian and Venezuelan vibes, while Cuchifrito on Old Lexington keeps it real with Puerto Rican flair Asian Adventures: Sushi, Pho, and SpiceIf Asian cuisine is your jam, Winston’s got you covered with some under-the-radar winners. Mizu earned repeated nods for sushi that’s fresh, affordable, and rave-worthy—perfect for a quick lunch or a chill dinner. For Thai, Thai Sawatdee on Healy Drive outshines its sister location with killer dishes and a cozy, hidden vibe. New Sichuan on Silas Creek Parkway promises authentic Chinese that’s a cut above the usual takeout suspects—think bold flavors for the adventurous. And don’t sleep on What Da Pho downtown; their noodle bowls and banh mi sandwiches are a Vietnamese hug in food form. Bonus: pair it with a scoop from Dream Kream Ice Cream nearby. Honorable Mentions: Curry and Noodle for Indian-Thai fusion, 18 Malaysia* for Malaysian delights, and Don Express on Knollwood for Japanese that’s “freaking good.” Southern Comfort: Hot Dogs, BBQ, and ChickenNo Winston-Salem list is complete without some Southern soul. Slappy’s is a fried chicken legend—locals debate the “dipped” style (not quite Nashville, but uniquely delicious), with collards and mac and cheese as must-try sides. For hot dogs, Pulliam’s on Old Walkertown Road is the hole-in-the-wall king—cash only, BBQ sandwiches, and a vibe that screams nostalgia. PB’s Takeout on Hawthorne keeps it simple with hot dogs and burgers that pack a punch, while Kermit’s Hot Dog House offers a an old-timey drive-up experience (Kermit’s has recently been offered for sale. We’re hoping the new owners keep it like it is!). BBQ lovers should hit Real Q for coarse-chopped Lexington-style pork with hush puppies that hit the spot. Hidden Gem Alert: Piedmont Aviation Snack Bar serves up the “best hamburger and hotdog in town” for a lunch that feels like a time capsule. It's a little hard to find, but once you get there, you know by the line! Global Bites: Italian, Greek, and BeyondWinston’s diversity shines through with these picks. Dioli’s Italian Market is a go-to for sandwiches and pastries, while Di Lisio’s Italian Restaurant boasts a cook straight from Italy—authentic doesn’t get closer than that. For Greek, Grecian Corner dishes out gyros and souvlaki that locals call “workhorses” of the scene, and Kalamaki skewers up fresh, bright flavors. Mojito Latin Soul Food brings Cuban flair with a side of personality, and Pizza Greco delivers pies that dodge the greasy norm. If breakfast is your thing, Young Cardinal Cafe and Co slings brunch like nobody’s business—think hot honey chicken sandwiches that’ll haunt your dreams. Offbeat Pick: Spaghetti Park in Clemmons for Italian with a twist--take out only! Just a short drive away. Bar Bites and Pub GrubSometimes you need a beer with your meal, and these spots deliver. Putters wins hearts with its Buffalo chicken sandwich, French Dip, and the “Red Moon” beer combo (Red Oak meets Blue Moon—genius). Finnegan’s Wake offers pub fare from Wednesday to Saturday, though it skips lunch hours. That Place in the West End (yep, that’s the name) pairs its menu with delivery to Joymongers Brewery next door—talk about teamwork. And Waldo’s Wings hooks you up with Tuesday and Thursday specials that are “soooo gooood.” Sweet Endings and Quick StopsFor a sweet finish, Bobby Boy Bakeshop—a James Beard semi-finalist—blends French finesse with killer sandwiches (not quite hole-in-the-wall, but too good to skip). Hot Dog City and King’s Hotdogs in Rural Hall keep it classic with fries and ice cream, while O’Brien’s Deli on Country Club piles sandwiches high. West Town Restaurant in Lewisville and Ronni’s Wings in Clemmons are worth the short trek for comfort food that feels like home. Final Bites: Your Winston-Salem Food Adventure AwaitsThis list is your ticket to dodging the “mid” meals and diving into Winston-Salem’s soulful, locally owned food scene. From tacos at Los Juanes to pho at What Da Pho, these spots prove you don’t need a big sign or a top Google ranking to serve up magic. Next time you’re hungry, skip the chains and let these hidden gems take your money—they’ve earned it. Got a favorite we missed?
