It's that time of year when the air turns crisp, leaves crunch underfoot, and neighborhoods light up with jack-o'-lanterns and laughter. As a mom who's been chasing down these moments since 2010, I know how precious it is to find spots where kids can run free, parents can breathe easy, and everyone leaves with a smile (and maybe a handful of candy). I've counted over 100 free events happening between now and November 6th, and I'm genuinely excited about how many options you have no matter where you live. Discover Local. Discover Free—because building stronger communities starts with these simple, shared joys. 🗓️ Here's What's Happening This Week TONIGHT - Thursday, October 30th The fun starts early! Mocksville kicks off with their Trunk or Treat and Hotel Transylvania at 4:30pm. Reidsville's downtown is open for trick-or-treating from 4-9pm. Greensboro offers something unique with their Halloween Organ Concert at 7pm. Check out events in Archdale, Asheboro, Pleasant Garden, and more than a dozen other towns. HALLOWEEN - Friday, October 31st This is the big one. Mount Airy starts at 3pm with their downtown celebration. Elkin's Main Street lights up from 5-8pm. Lexington throws their Boo Bash from 6-9pm. King has four separate events, including a special needs trunk or treat at 6pm. Mocksville's downtown goes until 9:30pm. And that's just scratching the surface—there are events in literally every corner of the Triad. SATURDAY - November 1st Time to shift gears with fall festivals and community gatherings. Hit the farmers markets early—Cobblestone opens at 8:30am in Winston-Salem, Greensboro's market at 8am. Oak Ridge hosts Fall in the Park (10am-4pm), Hanging Rock State Park has Rocking the Rock (11am-5pm), and Greensboro wraps up the evening with Hocus Pocus Movie Night in The Square at 6pm. SUNDAY - November 2nd A quieter day with Angelo's Artisan Market at Wise Man Brewing (12-5pm), FREE Community Lunch in Greensboro (1-3pm), and UNCSA performances in Winston-Salem. WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY - Nov 5-6 Lexington hosts Transformation Church Trunks of Blessings on Wednesday evening, and Winston-Salem opens The Gingerbread Craft Fair on Thursday (9am-7pm)—your first chance to get a jump on holiday shopping! Beyond the Candy: What This Week Really Means I've been doing this for 15 years now, and every October reminds me why I started. These aren't just events—they're the moments that make childhood magical. They're the trunk or treats organized by volunteers who spent their afternoon decorating their cars. They're the downtown business owners who hand out candy to hundreds of kids they've never met. They're the fire departments, churches, and community centers that open their doors because they believe in creating something special for families. And here's the thing: you don't need a lot of money to give your kids incredible memories. Every single event on our calendar has free admission. That's our promise, and it's what we've been about since 2010. A Few Practical Notes: With this many events happening, here are some quick tips: arrive early to the popular downtown events—parking fills up fast. Bring a flashlight for evening events, even if they're well-lit. Check the weather and have a backup plan (many trunk or treats have rain dates or drive-thru options). And most importantly, don't try to hit every event. Pick two or three that work for your family's schedule and actually enjoy them.
