This Independence Day, skip the ordinary and step into history. Did you know that the very first recorded 4th of July celebration in North Carolina took place right here in Winston-Salem’s beloved Old Salem? Back in 1783, just weeks after the Revolutionary War had ended, Governor Alexander Martin proclaimed July 4th a day of thanksgiving and peace. The Moravian community of Salem celebrated with food, fellowship, and a shared sense of hope for the future—a tradition that continues today in ways both historical and fun. 🏛️ A Full Day of Celebration (and Learning!)On Friday, July 4th, Old Salem Museums & Gardens invites all ages to experience a day of live music, historical reenactments, and family-friendly fun. Here are some highlights from this year’s event (all included with general admission): 🎺 Live Music on Salem Square
🚶♀️ Want to Visit Without a Ticket? Most, if not all, of those events listed above will take place at Salem Square, a public space where you can enjoy most of the events for free. You don’t need a ticket to enjoy the charm of Old Salem’s historic district! If you’ve never explored, this is your sign. 🧺 Stroll the cobblestone sidewalks, admire 18th-century architecture, and browse the Stockberger Supply in the Visitor Center 🍞 Grab a cookie or loaf of sugar cake from Winkler Bakery, one of the oldest continually operating bakeries in the country. 📸 Snap photos by the restored gardens, shady trees, and historic homes that tell the story of our region’s roots. 🎶 And even if you’re not attending the paid events, you might catch a few melodies and public festivities from Salem Square. Old Salem is one of those places where history doesn’t just live—it breathes. Whether you’re coming for the 4th of July celebrations or just looking to slow down and soak in something special, there’s truly no place like it in the Triad. 📍 Plan Your VisitOld Salem Museums & Gardens 600 S Main St, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 oldsalem.org Looking for more 4th of July events?
