Celebrate Kwanzaa in Winston-Salem: Community, Culture, and Connection

​Kwanzaa, celebrated every year from December 26 to January 1, is so much more than just a holiday. It’s a vibrant, week-long tribute to African heritage, unity, and shared values. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, the name "Kwanzaa" comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," meaning “first fruits.” Each day focuses on one of seven guiding principles, called the Nguzo Saba, offering a powerful framework for reflection, growth, and connection.

At its heart, Kwanzaa is about bringing people together. It’s a time to honor heritage, learn from one another, and build stronger communities. Through meaningful gatherings, creativity, and shared purpose, Kwanzaa inspires hope and unity for the future.

This year, Winston-Salem is hosting a series of free, family-friendly events that bring the spirit of Kwanzaa to life. Everyone is welcome—come join the celebration, connect with your neighbors, and experience the joy of this meaningful tradition.

December 26: Umoja (Unity)

• Where: Winston-Salem Urban League
• What: Celebrate the principle of unity, coming together as a community to strengthen bonds and support one another.

December 27: Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)

• Where: Delta Arts Center
• What: Honor self-determination by reflecting on personal goals and community growth through art, education, and empowerment.

December 28: Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)

• Where: St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church
• What: Focus on collective work and shared responsibility to build and maintain a strong, supportive community.

December 29: Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)

• Where: The Enterprise Conference and Event Center
• What: Celebrate cooperative economics by learning about and supporting Black-owned businesses and local entrepreneurs.

December 30: Nia (Purpose)

• Where: Grace Presbyterian Church
• What: Embrace the principle of purpose, exploring ways to build and sustain a meaningful legacy for future generations.

December 31: Kuumba (Creativity)

• Where: Forsyth County Central Library
• What: Celebrate creativity with an evening of performances, art, and shared inspiration to close out the Kwanzaa celebration.
