Everything You Need to Know About Bulky Pick-Up in Winston-Salem

It’s that time of year again! If you live in Winston-Salem, you’ve probably noticed piles of unwanted furniture, broken appliances, and other random items starting to line the curbs. That’s right--bulky item collection is in full swing!

A few weeks before your neighborhood’s scheduled pick-up, the City of Winston-Salem sends out a handy postcard letting you know when it’s time to start clearing out the clutter. This year, our neighborhood’s turn was this week, and I was amazed at how smoothly everything went.

We started dragging items to the curb on Friday, and by the time I carried out a broken appliance and came back out for my next load, a “scavenger” had already swooped in and taken it. I couldn’t believe how fast things disappeared! Honestly, by the time the city’s trucks rolled around on Monday morning, our pile was half gone. This year, the city was on it - our entire pile was gone before 9 a.m. on the first day of our scheduled week!

​If you’re ready to clear out your unwanted items, here’s a quick list of what the city will gladly haul away:

Pro Tip: If your items are still in decent condition, don’t be surprised if a savvy “scavenger” grabs them before the city does. It’s a great way for gently used items to get a second life!

❌ Items You Can’t Put Out for Bulky Pick-Up

​Now, before you haul everything out, it’s important to know that not everything can be collected. The following items are a no-go:

• Construction/Building Material
• Car Parts
• Cement
• Electronic Waste (more on that below!)

• Hazardous or Infectious Waste
• Lumber
• Oil Drums
• Paint
• Rocks
• Tires

• Yard Waste
• Electronics

📺 Special Note on Electronics

​Electronics deserve their own category because they’re banned from landfills in North Carolina. That means you cannot throw out the following items:

• All Televisions (Flat-panel, Projection, and Tube TVs)
• CPUs, Laptops, and Computer Accessories
• Mice and Keyboards
• Monitors
• Printers, Fax Machines, and Scanners

If you need to get rid of any of these, you’ll need to take them to an electronics recycling center or a designated drop-off site.

🗓️ When and How to Put Out Your Bulky Items

​Here’s how to make sure your items get picked up without any hassle:
​

• Timing is everything. Place your items out the weekend before your scheduled collection.
• Single-family homes only. Bulky item collection is for single-family residences, not businesses or apartment complexes.
• One pass only. The city trucks will go through your neighborhood once—so don’t miss your window!
• No mixing allowed. Do not mix bulky items with yard waste, recyclables, or brush. Mixed piles will be left behind.

​If you miss your neighborhood’s bulky pick-up (or have more items throughout the year), you can still dispose of these items at the Hanes Mill Road Landfill.

​Hours:

• Monday–Friday: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Saturday: 8 a.m. to Noon
