If you're looking for a peaceful retreat, a beautiful place to take a walk, or a new lakeside spot to enjoy the outdoors without spending a dime, plan a visit to the brand-new J. Dudley Watts Jr. Belews Lake Park in northeastern Forsyth County. Nestled along the shoreline of Belews Lake, this 216-acre park offers nearly two miles of lake frontage and is already gaining attention as a quiet, refreshing escape for families and nature lovers alike. While wildlife sightings may be minimal (we only spotted a few squirrels and a shy turtle under the dock!), the wooded gravel trails are wide, peaceful, and perfect for a reflective walk. Designed with passive recreation in mind, the park encourages visitors to slow down, take in the scenery, and enjoy low-impact activities like walking, picknicking, light fishing, photography, or kite flying. Due to protected buffer zones, you won't get up close to the lake except at the fishing pier — and while swimming isn’t allowed, the calm setting offers a welcome break from the busy day-to-day. With minimal development and a commitment to preserving the land, Belews Lake Park is a gentle reminder that connecting with nature doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes all you need is a quiet trail, open sky, and time to breathe. What’s Open NowPhase One of the park opened in 2025 and includes a thoughtfully designed mix of features to help you relax and enjoy the outdoors:
While there’s no playground or comfort station yet, those are coming in future phases — and what’s already here is beautiful, clean, and ready for visitors. Nature First DesignThis isn’t just another park — it’s one built with the environment in mind. There’s a 300-foot buffer zone around the lake and 100-foot protections around streams to keep the natural landscape thriving. The result? A quiet, scenic escape you’ll want to revisit. It’s Forsyth County’s first public park on Belews Lake and now ranks as the county’s fourth largest. Future development (planned by 2027) includes a second road, comfort stations, a playground, an indoor meeting space, two additional picnic shelters, an observation tower, another fishing dock, and even more walking trails. Honoring the Past, Speaking Out Today: The Piedmont Triad and the Ongoing Fight for Civil Rights5/1/2025 Over the past two weeks, I’ve taken part in two peaceful protests - one in Greensboro on April 19, and another in Winston-Salem today, on May 1st, known around the world as May Day. I stood alongside others who are deeply concerned about the direction our country is heading. I’m especially disturbed by what feels like the weakening of our Constitution - leaders bypassing checks and balances, using power to intimidate, and agencies like ICE arresting and deporting people without due process. These moments made me think about our own community here in the Piedmont Triad. We are no strangers to civil rights struggles. In fact, we’ve played a powerful part in the history of American activism - especially during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Let’s take a look at how the Triad helped shape history and how that legacy still matters today. Greensboro and the Sit-Ins That Changed America![]() On February 1, 1960, four students from North Carolina A&T State University - now known as the “A&T Four” - walked into a Woolworth’s store in downtown Greensboro. They sat down at a “whites-only” lunch counter and politely asked for coffee. When they were denied service, they didn’t get up. Instead, they stayed seated in quiet protest. Their brave and peaceful action sparked a movement. Soon, students across the South were staging their own sit-ins. These protests helped end segregation in public places like restaurants and stores. Women from Bennett College, another historically Black college in Greensboro, also played a huge role. They organized, marched, and helped keep the momentum going. Their work helped launch the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which became one of the most important civil rights groups in the country. Today, you can visit the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in the very same Woolworth’s building to learn more about this moment in history. What Made the Triad’s Activism Different? While many cities across the South were fighting for civil rights, the Piedmont Triad stood out in a few key ways:
Smart Strategies for ChangeThe Triad’s activism was successful because of how it was organized:
Places to Visit and Learn MoreIf you want to dive deeper into the Civil Rights legacy here in the Triad, here are some important sites that are open to the public:
Annual Celebrations and EventsThe Triad continues to celebrate its civil rights legacy through events like:
The Work ContinuesToday, as our communities continue to wrestle with issues of racism, inequality, and belonging, the echoes of Greensboro’s sit-ins and other pivotal civil rights moments remind us that history is more than the past - it’s part of who we are. While the struggles of today may differ in form, the call for justice and dignity is just as urgent.
Honoring the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement means recognizing how far we’ve come and how much work remains — not just on the national stage, but right here at home. It’s in the conversations we have, the neighbors we stand beside, and the efforts we make to ensure everyone in our community feels seen, heard, and valued. Let’s honor the past by staying involved, educating ourselves, and standing up—peacefully and powerfully - for freedom and justice for all. Your local libraries have you covered. From story times to tech workshops, these community gems offer a treasure trove of free events and resources. Growing up, my parents always said, “Readers are leaders,” and I’ve seen firsthand how libraries inspire that leadership through knowledge and connection. At Piedmont Triad Living, we’re all about uncovering free things to do, and libraries across Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties are perfect for families and lifelong learners. Let’s explore why libraries are your go-to for fun, learning, and community vibes. Scroll to the bottom for the full list of libraries in the Piedmont Triad, including address. Why Libraries Are a Family’s Best FriendLibraries aren’t just about books (though those are awesome too). They’re vibrant hubs where families can bond, kids can grow, and everyone can explore new interests without spending a dime. Most libraries in the Piedmont Triad host calendars packed with free events - think toddler story times, teen gaming nights, author talks, and even STEM workshops. Plus, they offer free Wi-Fi, computers, and access to e-books and streaming services like Libby or Hoopla. Whether you’re a parent juggling a tight budget or a retiree looking to learn a new skill, libraries deliver. When I was a kid, our school's 100-book reading program was the highlight of my schoolyear. I’d race to log my book, earn prizes, and the students that reached 100 had a pizza party. I was always one of the first to hit the magic number! That “readers are leaders” mantra stuck with me, and now I see the same magic happening for families across the Triad. Libraries level the playing field, giving everyone access to tools and opportunities to thrive. A Tour of Piedmont Triad Libraries and Their Free EventsThe Piedmont Triad is home to dozens of libraries, each with its own charm and a calendar bursting with free activities.
