Archdale, N.C. – Archdale Parks and Recreation (APRD) is pleased to announce parkrun is coming to Creekside Park. parkruns are volunteer led events held all over the world, with nearly 50 in the United States. Currently Durham boasts the only parkrun in North Carolina. Creekside parkrun is a free, timed, 5k, walk/jog/run event for all ages and abilities. It will be held every Saturday at 9 a.m. all year long, with a few exceptions. The first official Creekside parkrun will be held on September 18. Though not official, test events will be held on August 21 and September 11.

A group of local volunteers has been working to establish Creekside parkrun since 2020 when the scheduled launch was postponed due to the pause of parkruns around the world. Volunteer parkrun Co-Event Director Joyce Wolford says she’s excited to help bring parkrun to the Piedmont area of North Carolina. “The goal of Creekside parkrun is to encourage folks to be active and enjoy the outdoors. Everyone is welcome at these free, family-oriented events. We hope the central location of Creekside Park will attract not only people from Randolph County, but surrounding counties as well.” According to Jocelyn Moon, Marketing and Programming Coordinator, APRD was excited to cosponsor this event when it was presented by Wolford because it aligns so well with APRD’s mission and goals. parkrun encourages exercise in nature. Both exercise and being in a natural setting have been proven to increase not just physical health, but also mental health. So be sure to join us on Saturdays for exercise, scenery, and comradery.

The Creekside parkrun course starts and finishes behind the Senior Center inside Creekside Park. Participants are required to complete a one-time registration at https://www.parkrun.us/creekside/ for their free, personal barcode. The barcode is scanned at the completion of each event to calculate results. It also inc1udes the participant’s emergency contact information. There is no sign-up for each week’s event.
