Check out our full community calendar where we’re always adding new family-friendly events across the Piedmont Triad. And if you know of a free event we should share, send it our way! Let’s make the most of the week and enjoy everything our community has to offer. There are some places in a city that belong to everyone… but somehow still feel like they’re yours. For me and my girls, that place is ARTivity on the Green in downtown Winston-Salem. If you’ve ever wandered the Arts District, you’ve probably noticed the tall red smokestacks, the rolling grassy hills, and the giant mural wall that changes every year. But if you’ve spent time there, you know ARTivity is more than just a park. It’s a place to pause. To play. To breathe. And sometimes… to process life. A Park Built for Art (and Community)ARTivity on the Green opened in 2015 as a project of the nonprofit Art for Art’s Sake (AFAS). The goal was simple but powerful: create a space where art and community meet. The half-acre park sits right between the Downtown Arts District and Innovation Quarter, connecting two creative parts of the city. Instead of a traditional park, ARTivity was designed as an interactive art space:
In other words… it’s art you can climb on, sit in, and experience. And that’s exactly what makes it special. Our Little Downtown EscapeWhen my girls were younger, ARTivity became one of our favorite spots downtown. They’d run up and down the grassy mounds. We’d sit on the hills and watch the mist drift out of the towers. Sometimes we’d just relax on the sidewalk and people-watch for a while. It was simple, but it was ours. And like many places that become part of family life, ARTivity also holds some of the most meaningful memories we share. It’s been a place where we’ve laughed, played, and sometimes just sat together during harder moments in life. Thankfully, it’s the kind of space that allows that — open, peaceful, and full of quiet corners where you can breathe for a minute while the city keeps moving around you. ARTivity has always felt like a place where emotions — happy or hard — belong. The Mural Wall: Always ChangingOne of the coolest parts of ARTivity is the massive mural wall. Each year, local artists are invited to repaint it during a public art event. The entire wall becomes a living canvas, evolving over time and showcasing the creativity of the Winston-Salem community. You never quite know what you’ll see there next — which makes every visit feel a little different. If you’re someone who loves photos (and if you follow Piedmont Triad Living, you probably do), it’s also one of the most colorful backdrops in the city. The Art Doesn’t Stop at the ParkRight next to ARTivity is the AFAS Center for the Arts, which houses galleries, studios, and community art programs. The nonprofit behind the park focuses on making art accessible to everyone through public programs, events, and installations around the city. Inside the center you’ll find:
And scattered throughout downtown, you’ll also notice some whimsical public art projects — including painted mannequins like the one featured in the video below. The piece in our video below, created by local artist Stewart Knight, is called “Queen of a Thousand Names.” And like so many things connected to ARTivity, it’s unexpected, imaginative, and very Winston-Salem. Why I Love ARTivitySome parks are beautiful. Some are fun. ARTivity somehow manages to be both personal and public at the same time. Kids run through it. Artists paint there. People sit quietly on the hills. And if you’ve lived here long enough, chances are you’ve had a moment there that stayed with you. For our family, ARTivity will always be more than a park. It’s a place that holds pieces of our story. ADDRESSARTivity on the Green 630 N Liberty St Downtown Winston-Salem If you’re exploring downtown with your family, this is an easy stop — whether you want a place for kids to stretch their legs, a colorful photo spot, or just a quiet place to sit for a minute. And if you’ve never visited before, you might just discover your own little corner of Winston-Salem there.
